A collection of hand-held devices, battery-powered but may include manual, intended to be used by a physician to help perform parts of a general physical examination of a patient [i.e., ear/nose/throat (ENT) and ophthalmic examinations, blood pressure measurements, temperature] commonly conducted in a primary care setting. The devices (e.g., aneroid sphygmomanometer, otoscope, ophthalmoscope, electronic thermometer) are typically housed within a line-powered charging station (e.g., desktop, wall-mounted) or carry case, which may include accessories (e.g., ear specula, spare light bulbs). This is a reusable device that may contain some disposable devices.

A semi-rigid or rigid, plastic or metal tube that is cone-shaped (i.e., it tapers down from a standard instrument fitting size to a small opening) and is either hand-held and manually inserted, or fitted onto a compatible otoscope, and then inserted into the ear canal to create a channel for examination, suction, irrigation, or the insertion of another surgical device during an ear/nose/throat (ENT) procedure. It may be referred to as an ear cannula. This is a single-use device.

A rigid plastic or metal tube that is cone-shaped (i.e., it tapers down from a standard instrument fitting size to a small opening) and is either hand-held and manually inserted, or fitted onto a compatible otoscope, and then inserted into the ear canal to create a channel for examination, suction, irrigation, or the insertion of another surgical device during an ear/nose/throat (ENT) procedure. It may in addition be intended for use with an audiometer and might also be referred to as an ear cannula or probe. This is a reusable device.

An electrically-powered, hand-held device designed for examination of the outer ear canal and tympanic membrane (eardrum) by direct viewing through the ear opening. It consists of a main unit (commonly referred to as the head) with a built-in light source intended to illuminate the interior of the ear canal with a detachable cone-shaped tube (speculum) inserted in the ear canal; it may facilitate the application of air pressure for pneumatic otoscopy. A dedicated power supply handpiece and/or an insufflation bulb may be included with the head.
